As reported recently in the Herald Sun newspaper, 'Some Like It Hot, So Does Your Heart' —

5 October 2016:

A study of over 2,300 middle aged men by researchers at the University of Eastern Finland has found that the increased frequency of sauna bathing can reduce the risk of heart related death.  Additionally, the amount of time spent taking a sauna was also linked to the reduced risk of fatal heart attacks or other cardiac events with those spending longer in the sauna less likely to experience a cardiac event compared to less frequent users.

The 20 year follow-up study focused on men aged between 42 and 60 years old from Eastern Finland and was broken down into participants who had a sauna bathing session once per week,

2-3 times per week and 4-7 times per week.

The study indicated that the more frequent and longer the sauna bathing sessions, the less likely was death from a sudden heart attack or other cardiac related event.

The reason why this occurs is not yet understood, however it is believed that taking a sauna may reduce blood pressure and maintain blood vessel elasticity.

Whilst the study looked at men only it is thought that it should apply equally to both sexes.
